Same sex marriages - important information
A change in the law now means that the first same sex marriages can be held on and after 29 March 2014. Important information on how and when you can give notice and the process for anyone wishing to change a booked civil partnership into a civil marriage is available here.
Marriage - arrangement and ceremonies
We offer two kinds of ceremonies for marriage - a simple ceremony and an enhanced ceremony.
The simple marriage ceremony meets all necessary legal requirements. It has no enhancements and is for up to six guests including two witnesses. We offer this ceremony in all our registration offices. You can view costs here, which include one certificate.
The enhanced ceremony is always offered for ceremonies at approved venues.
The marriage ceremony
A civil marriage ceremony must be entirely non-religious and may not, by law, contain any religious readings or music. Two witnesses aged 16 or over are required to sign the marriage register. For more information see our ceremony bookings terms and conditions [48kb].
We can make special arrangements at very short notice for a marriage ceremony under special licence, where one person in the relationship is very seriously ill and not expected to recover. Contact your local registration office for further information.
