Consultation on tobacco control and stop smoking services in North Yorkshire

We are asking people for their views on a strategy to reduce the number of smokers in North Yorkshire, as part of an overall process designed to improve health and wellbeing in the county.

Background

Smoking is still the biggest preventable cause of ill health and early death in North Yorkshire, killing over 1,000 people every year. In some areas of the county there are higher than average numbers of women smoking during pregnancy and at the time of delivery.

Two public consultations are taking place on:

  1. A North Yorkshire draft tobacco control strategy; and
  2. What a new North Yorkshire stop smoking service should offer to help more people to quit.

We encourage residents, users of our services, providers and health professionals to take part and give their views on both of these proposals.

1. The draft North Yorkshire tobacco control strategy

Please note - this element of the consultation closed on 26 January 2015.

The draft tobacco control strategy is a partnership document that has a vision to inspire a smoke-free generation in North Yorkshire. The strategy aims are:

  • To improve the health of the population by reducing smoking rates and exposure to second-hand smoke; and
  • To reduce differences in health outcomes in North Yorkshire in the longer term by reducing the number of smoking related illnesses suffered by the population.

The draft tobacco control strategy outlines our five tobacco control priority areas and how they could be achieved:

  • Prevent children and young  people from smoking;
  • Make a smoke-free lifestyle the norm;
  • Reduce illegal tobacco in the community;
  • Support smokers to quit; and
  • Carry out public information campaigns.

2. North Yorkshire stop smoking service

Please note - this element of the consultation closed on 11 February 2015.

The proposed model for a specialist stop smoking service outlines what it would cover and how it would operate, with the emphasis on ease of access for the service user and a high quality, value for money service for the council.

The county council is holding a consultation event about the proposed new specialist Stop Smoking service. If you want to find out more about the proposed new service or help to shape the final service, book a place at the meeting at Allerton Court Hotel, Northallerton, on Thursday 15 January between 9am and noon. To book a place please contact Adam Peacock on 01609 532121 or email adam.peacock@northyorks.gov.uk.
