Library reconfiguration

See this page for all the latest information about the changes to the library service.

On 7 July 2015 the council's executive committee agreed to the recommendations in the library report. They agreed that from Spring 2017 there would be seven core libraries, i.e. one in each district council area, which would have 60 per cent of their current staffing levels; five hybrid libraries which would have 40 per cent of their current staffing levels; and 21 additional community managed libraries. All libraries will need volunteers to maintain their current opening hours.

The executive also agreed to provide an element of staffing (between five and 15 hours) to assist each community library to become established, and to subsidise the rent and utility costs where these costs exceed income.

You can read the report and associated documents from this meeting here.

Updated reports on the progress made in different communities are discussed by the policy and partnerships overview and scrutiny committee and the executive. The latest report (18 April 2016) can be viewed here.

Previous reports and associated documents available here (16 November 2015) and (8 December 2015).

On 20 November 2015 the library service ran a 'Delivering community libraries' conference aimed at local elected members and existing or potential partners/management groups. The conference was well attended by 116 people. This included ten members; 16 people from existing community libraries; and 40 people from prospective community library groups. The remaining attenders included presenters and facilitators of workshops and stands, staff from libraries, the stronger communities team and other North Yorkshire County Council colleagues.

The keynote speaker was Paul Blantern, chief executive of Northamptonshire County Council and the chair of the national leadership for libraries taskforce. pdf icon Read Paul Blantern's presentation here [1Mb].
