Adapting your home with a disabled facilities grant in the Craven area

Information about adapting your home to meet your health needs.

You may wish to adapt your home to help someone who has a disability or medical condition get around with as much ease, comfort and independence as possible.

Disabled facilities grants can help with this. They are most commonly used to pay for stair lifts, level access showers and ramps. But the grant also covers extensions to the home where there is not enough space for the disabled person's needs.

Disabled facilities grants

The disabled facilities grant is a mandatory grant of up to £30,000 awarded following referral from our health and adult services team.

The grant is means tested unless the disabled person receives certain benefits or the adaptation benefits a child.

However, we have discretion to waive the requirement for a means test where the works are for a stair lift, specialist toilet or equipment or a ramp where the total cost of the works is less than £7,000.

We may also waive the requirement for a means test where there is a need for the work to be carried out as an emergency, for example, to enable a discharge from hospital.

There may be other discretionary help we are able to offer (if funding is available) where there is a clear health and wellbeing benefit for the disabled person. An example of this would be paying for relocation costs as an alternative to adapting the current home.

If you, or someone you provide care for, are struggling to get around the home, please contact us to arrange an assessment of your needs.
