Local transport plan 2006 - 2011

The Local Transport Plan (LTP) is a set of documents that the Government requires all local transport authorities to produce. The LTP sets out our plans and strategies for maintaining and improving all aspects of the local transport system over a set period of time, usually 5 years.

As well as improvement schemes, the Plan also delivers:

  • maintenance schemes
  • highway and footway repair
  • improvement and replacement of bridges and structures.

We have to submit our Local Transport Plan to the Government for consideration. When we produced the second Local Transport Plan, to cover the period 2006 to 2011, the Government considered that it was one of the best LTPs completed in the country and gave it an 'excellent' rating.

The County Council completed its second Local Transport Plan, also known as LPT2, in March 2006. This covers the period from April 2006 to March 2011.

The second Local Transport Plan sets out the Council's approach to improving community life through better transport provision.

North Yorkshire County Council have used the Local Transport Plan to deliver a very wide range of transport improvements including schemes as varied as;

  • Carriageway replacement
  • Craven Hubs community transport initiative,
  • Scarborough Integrated Transport Scheme, (funded by the Department for Transport)
  • Bridge maintenance
  • Road safety training and awareness courses.

We have completed

  • 38 safety related schemes
  • 54 accessibility schemes
  • 13 congestion schemes
  • over 952 km of footway and carriageway maintenance schemes.

Together these schemes have helped us to:

  • save lives through road safety improvements
  • improve accessibility opportunities for many people in different communities
  • increase bus use by 14% overall and by over 27% on the most important routes.
