How should I treat people I don't know who call at my door?Most of the people that call at your house will be people you know or who you are expecting.
When somebody you don't know comes to your door, you should do the following:
If you do not have a door chain, ask them to pass their ID through the letterbox. Sometimes, people call round who claim to be from the gas or electricity supplier. You should verify their identity, as sometimes they can be bogus callers. Avoid signing any forms or giving money to people that you don't know when they turn up out of the blue. (This is called "cold calling"). Remember, you can dial 999 and ask for police assistance if you feel threatened. If you aren't sure – don't let them in. |
