Fostering, adopting and looked after children

North Yorkshire County Council has responsibility for all children in care, including those in foster care and residential care. We want to help and develop children and young people who might be going through a difficult stage in their lives. We can also provide help to people and families who want to support vulnerable children and young people.

We can provide information and support for people wanting to act as foster parents or adopt a child. We also support children and young people who are adopted; live with foster parents; or are in care.

In this section you can also find information about specialist services such as treatment fostering; short breaks for disabled children and young people, also known as respite care; and shared care for children.

Corporate parenting

The role of corporate parenting places a collective responsibility on all local authorities to achieve good parenting for all children and young people in care. It requires ownership and leadership at a senior level and includes all elected members.
