Description of goods

Most products and services have descriptions applied to them; whether it be that a tradesman is a member of a specific trade body, or that a fruit cake contains a certain amount of fruit. It is trading standards remit to take enforcement action to ensure such descriptions are accurate.

Descriptions can be applied to most characteristics of a product or service;

  • age or history
  • quantity or size
  • fitness for purpose
  • method and place of manufacture
  • composition
  • approval or recommendation

Incorrectly described goods or services may be both a civil matter, which you may pursue, and a criminal matter, which trading standards can look into to ensure other consumers are not misled. If you think a description which has been applied to a product or service is incorrect, you should contact consumer direct. If you are a business seeking advice on description, please see our business advice page.
