Assisting rural communities
North Yorkshire is predominantly rural and over half of its population live in areas defined as 'sparse' or 'super sparse'. This can make accessing services more difficult and many rural areas are also characterised by lower wages and a disproportionate and increasing elderly population.
LEADER LEADER is a European initiative for assisting and funding rural communities to improve the quality of life and economic prosperity in their local area. There are three LEADER programmes that cover North Yorkshire; Applicants must be a group or organisation with governance documents and a bank account. Applications from private individuals or businesses will not be accepted. North Yorkshire County Council administers the LEADER schemes for the North York Moors, Coast and Hills and Yorkshire Dales. East Riding of Yorkshire Council administers the Coast, Wolds, Wetlands and Waterways scheme.
