What are these services?

School transport - 16-19 year olds

We will provide subsidised assistance with transport for eligible students aged 16 years to 19 years (18 years at the start of your course). Students who meet the eligibility criteria will be issued a travel pass allowing them to make return journeys to and from home to school/college during normal school/college time.

Apply online for post 16 transport assistance

Please ensure you read the eligibility criteria below before applying online. The application process differs depending on whether you are staying on at your normal school, changing school, going to college or have special circumstances (including pupils with a statement of special educational needs). Please ensure you choose the correct option for your circumstances below.

Staying on at your normal school

If you are staying on at your normal school, apply online for a paid travel permit. There is no charge for students with a statement of special educational needs, students who live independently and who are in receipt of income support, registered young carers and students who are in care to the Local Authority. On applying you will need to forward proof of this and also provide a means of payment (the charge will be waived if you are found to meet this criteria). If you have special circumstances you will need to apply for post 16 travel assistance below.

Changing school, going to college, renewing or if you have special circumstances

Certificate

If you are changing school, going to college, renewing your post 16 transport for 2013/14* or have special circumstances, we require further details about what you want to study and where you want to go. You can provide these details online. We will assess your application against the post 16 travel policy and once your application has been assessed you will be notified accordingly.

* If you are renewing your post 16 transport for 2013/14 you will need to select 'No' to the renewal option in the student details section and complete the whole form (as we currently do not hold any of your details in electronic format).

Our preferred method for receiving applications is online, where you can set up direct debit payments. You can make one payment in full or opt to pay nine monthly instalments (the first payment is taken in October, with the final payment taken in June). If paying by direct debit, payment will only be taken when transport assistance has been approved. If you are unable to apply online, you can apply by post by printing and manually completing an application form. View further information here about applying by post.

Please note, terms and conditions apply when applying for post 16 transport assistance. By applying, you are agreeing to these terms and conditions.

Eligibility

Transport assistance will continue for students who started their course before they were 19 provided that:

  • students make a contribution of £360 (charge from September 2013) towards their travel costs each year;
  • the school/college attended is more than three miles from the student's home by the nearest available walking route;
  • the school/college is the nearest school sixth form, sixth form college or college of further education to their home regardless of local government boundaries or is the sixth form of the secondary school which is recognised as the normal school for the student's home address;
  • the school/college is the nearest establishment offering a course that we consider suitable to a student's career choice, or that is a pre-requisite for entry into higher education.

Please note, students are expected to make their own way to the pick up point. If you live over one mile from the nearest pick-up point, we may be able to offer you a mileage allowance to the pick-up point.

Returning your bus pass if your circumstances change

If you no longer require your bus pass, for instance if you withdraw from your course or have found an alternative means of transport, you must return your pass as soon as possible to the post 16 team at the education office. You are advised to return the pass by recorded delivery as we cannot be held responsible for any loss in the post. It is your responsibility to prove you have returned it to us and you are legally responsible for the full commercial cost of the transport until the pass is no longer required and has been returned to us.

On receipt of your pass we will calculate any outstanding balance and send you an invoice for this amount. If you have overpaid us, we will notify you of the refund and will credit your bank account or send you a cheque.
