What are these services?

School - transport

Pupils of compulsory school age are entitled to free school transport if they live beyond the statutory walking distance. It is the responsibility of the Local Authority (LA) to make arrangements for all eligible children to travel to school in reasonable safety and comfort and arrive there without stress or difficulty so that they can benefit from their education.

Working closely with schools and operators, we are committed to raising the standard of home to school transport throughout the county. All vehicles operating on our services are subject to regular inspections through various licensing authorities. We also undertake additional checks and inspections as part of our ongoing commitment to improve standards, including fitting seatbelts wherever possible and we make sure that our drivers and passenger assistants are all fully trained and have an enhanced Criminal Records Bureau (CRB) check.

It is your responsibility to make sure that your child goes to school. You should also make sure they wear seatbelts (where they are fitted) and behave well on the transport we have provided.

Our policy changed in September 2012. This means we no longer offer free transport to denominational schools or 'equivalent cost' journeys to your preferred school.

Arrangements for transporting pupils to denominational schools will change in 2016 for secondary aged pupils and 2018 for primary aged pupils, when the network will be reviewed and all provision removed. This will mean that at that point paid permits will not be available for purchase and parents will be responsible for all transport arrangements and costs.

It is important that you do not rely on existing travel arrangements when deciding which school you wish your child to attend. Further information can be found by looking at the frequently asked questions at the bottom of the page.

Whilst it is the responsibility of the parent or guardian to ensure that children attend school, the Local Authority will provide free transport for pupils from the term in which they are five until year 11 either

  • to the "normal" school for your child's home; or
  • to your preferred school, if it is nearer to your child's home than the "normal" school

provided:

  • for those aged five to year six, the distance, measured by the nearest available route, is over two miles from your child's home; and
  • for those in years seven to 11, the distance, measured by the nearest available route, is over three miles from your child's home.

Information about transport for pupils with special educational needs or for young people attending post-16 provision can be elsewhere on this website.

Information about school transport timetables

Visit the timetable information page to search for up-to-date timetable information. Where the timetable is shown as 'permits only' this is solely for the use of transporting school pupils with a valid travel permit. If the timetable shows 'fares & permits' this service is providing transport at school times and offers facilities for fare paying pupils to access. Timetable information is available for bus services only, you will need to contact the operator for more details about taxi services.

If you have been issued with a travel permit you should have this available for inspection when you are using school transport. If you require a replacement travel permit, you can apply online for a replacement travel permit.

Advice leaflets are available to download at the foot of this page - these explain what we do to ensure that home to school transport journeys are as safe as possible.
