In Autumn 2009 the Criminal Justice and Immigration Bill 2008 introduced the Youth Rehabilitation Order (YRO). This is the new standard community sentence for young people who offend and combines a number of existing sentences into one sentence. It aims to simplify sentencing for young people, while improving the flexibility of interventions. More details can be found on the Youth Justice Board website.
Every young person under a YRO will complete an agreed programme of work to help them to stay out of trouble and make better choices. Courts may also add special Requirements to YROs, for example a night-time curfew, compulsory school attendance or that the young person does not associate with specific people who are thought to be a bad influence.
Appointments and requirements are a compulsory part of the Order, and must be followed. If the young person does not comply, they will have to attend another court hearing and their sentence may be increased.
