Apprenticeships - case study

A day in the life of.... an apprentice community information assistant.

Name: Natalie Holmes
Age: 18
Hobbies: Aerobics, going out with friends, swimming
Job Title: Community Information Assistant
Location: Harrogate Library
Length of time in this role: 9 months
What attracted you to this position as Community Information Assistant?
I thought it would be a good starting point for a career in business and administration, and I thought North Yorkshire County Council would be a good place to work for.

Explain a day in the life of
Morning - I usually start at 09:00 and turn on all the computers and log in the telephones. I then change all the date stamps to 3 weeks from that date and check the area is tidy. We let customers in from 09:30 and throughout the morning I issue and discharge books, help people with any enquiries and assist people on the computers.

Afternoon - During the afternoon, after my dinner hour, I usually return to the desk to issue and discharge books again. I also help file the books into order and return them to their correct place in the library. I am always available to help anyone on the computers and regularly assist people who wish to create email accounts and would like help with scanning documents. Occasionally in the afternoon, I will lead a story time. This involves me reading books to a group of children with their parents, and involving them in activities such as colouring and singing nursery rhymes

What have been the best bits so far?
The best bits so far have been all the visits I have been on, such as visits to the School Library service and St John Fishers School, where I have seen how other people work and gained experience working in different settings, such as promoting events and working with children. I have also enjoyed meeting new people and learning new skills from the people I work with.

What attracted you to apply for an apprenticeship with North Yorkshire County Council?
After leaving college with an NVQ level 3 in Health and Social Care, I didn't want to go to university, and wanted to gain experience in the workplace. I thought an apprenticeship with North Yorkshire County Council would be a good starting place for a career working in Social care and administration, and would provide me with experience working with different types of people, as well as gaining a qualification. There are also many different career paths to choose from with NYCC.

What is your dream job?
I would like a job where I can carry out office duties, but also work with different variety of people and offer support and help to them
