What are these services?

Education for looked after children (ELAC) virtual school

The ELAC virtual school is not a teaching institution in its own right. It is a means by which the local authority can provide services and support for the education of children in the care of the County Council whether they are educated in North Yorkshire or elsewhere.

Education provision for looked after children should usually be taken to mean a full time place in a local school. However the ELAC virtual school will consider short-term teaching support of the looked after child has been excluded or is awaiting a school place and that child is working towards Key Stage 2 tests or other external examinations.

The team focuses on improving the attainment and achievements of children in care. It looks to support and improve attendance, reduce the number of exclusions and to provide support to children, young people and carers.

The team also provides assistance to other local authorities who have placed looked after children in North Yorkshire schools.
