Countryside - access landThe Countryside and Rights of Way Act 2000 gave a right of access to walk across open country, defined as mountain, moor, heath, down and registered common land.
Can I walk anywhere?No, it is not a right to roam anywhere. You can walk on mapped Open Access land, but must keep 20 metres away from houses and you are not allowed in active quarries, railway lines and landing strips. You must also obey any restrictions that are in place, to protect wildlife, prevent fire or for land management or safety reasons. Access land is shown on Ordnance Survey Explorer 1:25,000 scale maps published since May 2005. You can also see maps of access land and current restrictions on Natural England's website. PLEASE NOTE: Due to this year's (2013) very dry Spring there are several Fire Risk restrictions currently in place in North Yorkshire, please refer to the Rights of way - news page for more information.
