What are these services?

School - education in hospital

Sometimes it is necessary for children and young people to receive treatment in hospital. This can be over a short period or can be a prolonged course of treatment. On such occasions support may be available through the County Council's Pupil Referral Service.

Planned hospital admissions

If your child is awaiting a planned admission to hospital you should discuss this with your child's school as soon as possible in order that arrangements can be made for their education to continue with as little disruption as possible. The school will then make a referral to the Pupil Referral Service in their area to request hospital or home tuition following the operation or treatment.

In the majority of cases, pupils are taught in their home on their return once they are well enough to continue their education. Tuition is provided on a one to one basis for between five to 10 hours per week. The tutor will liaise with your child's school so that the work set is a continuation of the work he or she would be doing if they were at school.

If your child is in hospital for a prolonged period and they are well enough to continue learning, a tutor will come to the hospital.

Planned hospital admissions outside North Yorkshire

If your child is receiving hospital treatment in a hospital outside North Yorkshire, it is important that you discuss this with staff at your child's school as soon as possible in order that a plan can be put together for them to undertake distance learning.

Unplanned hospital admissions

In the event of an unplanned stay in hospital, your child's school still needs to be informed in order to request the support of the Pupil Referral Service. In some cases the hospital will contact the Pupil Referral Service to request tuition. You still need to inform your child's school however in order that they can prepare the work to be delivered by the tutor. In these circumstances, tuition will be provided on the same basis, that is between five to 10 hours per week, if your child is well enough to continue learning.

Once your child is well enough to return home, the tuition will continue until they are able to attend school. Review meetings will be held in order to prepare for their return to school and to ensure that suitable arrangements can be made in school.
