Babysitting is a process of taking care of a baby/child on behalf of the parents or the guardian when they are not around, perhaps an afternoon here and there, or in the evening. The care is usually in the parents/guardians own home.
It is up to you to choose a babysitter whom you trust to look after your children, as they are not not required to register with Ofsted, however if they are 18 or over, they can register with Ofsted as a Homechildcarer.
In addition there are registered childminders that may be willing to do some evening or weekend babysitting as an additional service.
Search for childminders in your area (please note that not all childminders choose to advertise on the internet). For a complete list of childminders in your area please contact the Families Information Service.
Guidance about the legal position in relation to employment of young people as baby-sitters can be found on the Child Employment section of this website..
The National Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Children (NSPCC) provide some guidance on choosing a babysitter.
