Where is the money coming from to deliver broadband?

The funding for Connecting North Yorkshire is coming from a variety of sources. The Council is investing some of its own money in the programme, but this is a small fraction of the total amount.

Central government has, via Broadband Delivery UK, pledged a significant amount of money to assist with installing fibre-optic cables in the market towns of the county. We hope to match this funding with money from the European Regional Development Fund and then increase it even further by leveraging money from the telecoms company that wins the procurement to install the infrastructure. This should allow all exchanges in the county's market towns to be connected to next generation broadband and possibly other larger exchanges too.

The surrounding rural areas will need alternative solutions. Other organisations including the Rural Development Programme for England (RDPE), North Yorkshire Strategic Partnership (NYSP) and Local Strategic Partnerships (LSPs) have already awarded funding of over £1million to provide schemes to reach communities not able to take advantage of the upgraded exchanges.
