Maintenance of illuminated signs and bollards

We aim to keep traffic signs legible and visible at all times. Illuminated signs and bollards have a maintenance inspection once a year which checks that:

  • opticals are operational and clean
  • lamps are within their life expectancy and changed at regular intervals
  • brackets, bolts and fittings are tightened and adjusted
  • the painting of supports and frames

Routine highway inspections, and reports from members of the public identify any faults and condition problems that may arise in between maintenance inspections. Common faults which arise are:

  • overgrown trees and hedges obstructing signs and preventing visibility by road users
  • road traffic accidents causing damage to existing illuminated signs and bollards
  • vandalism preventing visibility of the signs message
