What are these services?

Death - tell us once

When someone has died, North Yorkshire County Council can help you tell the people who need to know.

When someone has died, there are lots of things that need to be done, at a time when you probably least feel like doing them. One of these is contacting government departments and local council services that need to be told.

North Yorkshire County Council is providing a service which we hope will make things easier. This new service means that you can just tell us once and these organisations will be contacted on your behalf.

You can use this service to tell the following organisations about the death:

  • Adult services
  • Blue Badge parking permit
  • Child Benefit
  • Child Tax Credit
  • Children's services
  • Collection of payment for council services
  • Concessionary bus passes
  • Council housing
  • Council Tax
  • Council Tax benefit office
  • Department for Work and Pensions, including the pensions, disability and carers service; Jobcentre Plus and the overseas health team
  • Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA)
  • Electoral services
  • Housing benefit office
  • Identity and Passport Service
  • Library services
  • Ministry of Defence, Service Personnel and Veterans Agency, including War Pensions Scheme
  • Personal taxation
  • Working Tax Credit

How can I use this service?

When you make an appointment to register the death, the registrar will explain about the service so that you can use it immediately after the death is registered.

Information you will need to use the service

To make sure the right information is given to any organisations we contact for you, and so that you get the most out of the service, it will help the registrar if you can bring along with you the following information about the person who has died:

  • their National Insurance number and date of birth;
  • details of any benefits or services they were receiving;
  • their Driving Licence or Driving Licence number;
  • their Passport or Passport number

We may also ask you for information about:

  • their next of kin;
  • any surviving husband, wife or civil partner;
  • the person dealing with their estate.

You will need to get permission from these people to tell us about them before you use the service.

If you don't have this information with you when you visit the registration office, the registrar will give you details of the telephone service which you can use at a later date.
