How we decide what priority a route is

The route prioritisation has been developed over a number of years and is approved annually by the County Council.

The routes are based on:

  • Traffic flows of the roads
  • Optimal travel of the gritters- our 3 hour gritting runs cover a total of 4,400 kilometres

We are unable to treat our entire 9,000 kilometre road network due to the time it would take and the cost involved. To clear all roads as soon as the main roads are clear would require more staff and more equipment and spending a large sum of money on a new gritter just to have it sitting around all spring and summer would be a poor use of your money.

You can find out the priority of a route by consulting our online mapping service.

Gritting of scheduled and school bus routes

Priority 1 and 2 routes cover 54% of the total highway network. Assessments have identified that school buses run on over 75% of the network. The resources are unfortunately not available to treat all the routes used by school buses. Most, but not all, scheduled bus routes are on treated routes.
