How does the County Council fix potholes?

There are three stages to how we fix potholes:

Stage

Action

Identify

We carry out a schedule of planned inspections across the whole road network through our highway inspectors. This is how we identify most of the potholes on our roads.

The public also inform us either by phoning the customer services centre or reporting the problem online using our online form.

Assess and prioritise

We prioritise the repair of potholes based on the level of risk to road users. Consideration is given to the pothole's size and depth and the type of road on which it occurs.

Repair

The County Council will always look for the most cost-effective ways of fixing potholes and other road defects; a range of techniques and materials can be used to repair potholes depending on:

  • The pothole's size;
  • It's position;
  • Other potholes or road damage in the vicinity; and
  • The likelihood of future works on the specific stretch of road.
