What are these services?

My vehicle has been damaged by surface dressing, what can I do?

Despite using well established operational practices and experience operatives, occasionally something may go wrong and vehicles become damaged. This usually happens if road users ignore the speed limit signs with the result that flying chippings can cause broken windscreens and chipped paint together with bitumen splashes.

Should I contact the County Council?

Broken windscreens

Your own motor insurance will probably cover damage to windscreens.

If necessary

Bitumen splashes on paintwork

Cleaning products are available form most car accessory shops or garages for the safe removal of bitumen from paintwork.

If the damage is substantial

Bitumen on vehicle tyres

No attempt should be made to clean the tyres with any product. In many cases you will find that small amounts of bitumen on the tyre tread soon wear off. You may want to seek the advice of a specialist tyre company if you are in doubt.

If there are large quantities of bitumen

Substantial damage

You may want to contact the on site supervisor to report the damage

Report any substantial damage to the County Council

To report damage to the County Council:

Please do this as soon as possible after the incident has occurred. When you contact the County Council to report damage to your vehicle as a result of surfacing dressing please provide all of the details of the incident, including:

  • The extent of the damage
  • The location at which the damage occurred
  • When (date and time) the damage was caused

You can report an incident a s a result of surfacing works on the highway by:

  • Completing the on-line report form
  • Telephoning the Customer Service Centre on 0845 8 72 73 74

When we receive your notification of damage, we will ask our maintenance contractor to contact you to resolve the issue.
