What are these services?

Infectious diseases - investigation

The Department of Health deal with infectious diseases in humans whilst the Department for Environment, Food, and Rural Affairs (Defra) deal with infectious diseases for plants and animals. The emergency planning unit works with the emergency services, government departments and other units within the local authority to mitigate the effects of any outbreak.

Human and animal infectious diseases often make headline news, with rural areas of the United Kingdom under quarantine or outbreaks reported in hospitals or schools. The information, guidance and links on this page are there to help you learn about, and plan for such events.

It is important to listen to advice from your local health authorities and your employer as to what you should do if you suspect you have been exposed to an infectious disease. If in doubt contact NHS 111.
