Economic headlines – August 2010

• The number of North Yorkshire residents claiming Jobseekers Allowance (JSA) fell by 156 last month to 8,444 (July 2010). This is an unemployment rate of 2.3% compared to 3.6% nationally and 4.1% for the Yorkshire and Humber region.
• In North Yorkshire, 17.5% of JSA claimants have now been claiming for more than 12 months (long term unemployed). This compares to 17.6% in June 2010.
• There are 2,160 JSA claimants who are aged 18 to 24. The unemployment rate among 18 to 24 year olds rose slightly to 4.5% in July 2010. The June 2010 rate was 4.4%.
• There were 3,828 live unfilled job vacancies at Jobcentre Plus offices in North Yorkshire in July. This means that there were 2.2 Jobseekers Allowance claimants for each job centre vacancy compared to figures of 4.9 for Great Britain and 4.9 for the Yorkshire and Humber region.
