Licence - storage of petroleumThe County Council is the petroleum licensing authority for North Yorkshire. If you store petroleum for commercial or retail purposes you must have a licence. For licensing purposes 'petroleum' is any product of crude petroleum which has a flash point below 21 degrees centigrade. It includes petrol, benzene and pentane but does not include white spirit, paraffin, diesel oil or fuel oils. Sites licensed for the storage of petroleum are subject to inspection to ensure that those storing and dispensing petrol do so in a safe manner that does not cause risk to the public or the environment. Inspectors will check the condition of the forecourt, ensuring in particular that there are no leaks and that fire precautions (including suitable equipment) are in place. The site records will be examined to check that the storage tanks are being regularly monitored and that health and safety procedures are being followed.
