Marriage - registration of a place of worshipFor a place of religious worship to become authorised for marriage, an application should be made by the proprietor or trustee of the building for it to be registered for the solemnization of marriages. A fee is payable for this registration.
To apply for certification you should contact the Superintendent Registrar who will supply you with application forms and who can advise you further. These forms must be countersigned by some person connected with the place of worship. The building must have been taken into use as a place of meeting for religious worship before the forms are signed and dated. Please note that different rules usually apply to churches or chapels of the Church of England. General register office guidanceThe General register office has produced the guide below for the authorised persons, this provides advice on how to keep accurate records as well as the authorised person's role at marriage ceremonies. The General register office has introduced an occasional newsletter for authorised persons. For further information and guidance for clergy please see the Home Office website.
