Naming ceremonies

The birth of your child or the welcoming of a child into the family circle is a very special occasion and you may wish to formally celebrate his or her arrival with family and friends. A naming ceremony is a unique way of doing this. It is also a way of welcoming adopted children into a new family.

A naming ceremony is an alternative to a religious christening or baptism. It is an opportunity for your family and friends to welcome your child into the family and the wider community, by pledging your love and support to them.

Every naming ceremony is personal to you and your child. The ceremony includes readings and promises to your child chosen by you from our ceremony booklet. Supporting adults and grandparents can be included in the ceremony and make their own promises, chosen by you, to the support in the upbringing of your child. You may also wish to give a special gift to your child during the ceremony.

The ceremony can be held in any of our registration offices or approved venues which have been licensed by North Yorkshire County Council for the holding of civil ceremonies. These venues include stately homes and hotels of all kinds; they are required to conform to the relevant health and safety regulations.

Our team of friendly and professional registrars is happy to help you plan your perfect ceremony.

How to book a naming ceremony

To book a ceremony with us, please contact any of our registration offices. You will need to have decided upon a venue for your ceremony and have a date in mind. The registrar will then check availability for date and time, then arrange an appointment at your local registration office for you to complete the booking paperwork.

When you come to the appointment you will need to bring with you your child's birth certificate. In circumstances where this is not possible, please ask the registrar for further advice. You will also be asked to pay a non-refundable deposit which will be deducted from the final cost of the ceremony.

You can have a ceremony to name more than one child if you wish. The booking form has space for two children's names. If there are more than two children per ceremony, the details of the other children should be written on a separate piece of paper and attached to the booking form.

For further advice and assistance on naming ceremonies, please contact any of our offices. Full contact details can be found below.
