What are these services?

School - travel support

Home to school transport is available to many pupils and students. If eligible, it is normally free of charge but in some circumstances a mileage allowance may be offered by the Local Authority (LA). However, it is the responsibility of the parent or guardian to ensure that children attend school.

Our policy changed in September 2012. This means we no longer offer free transport to denominational schools or 'equivalent cost' journeys to your preferred school.

Arrangements for transporting pupils to denominational schools will change in 2016 for secondary aged pupils and 2018 for primary aged pupils, when the network will be reviewed and all provision removed. This will mean that at that point paid permits will not be available for purchase and parents will be responsible for all transport arrangements and costs.

It is important that you do not rely on existing travel arrangements when deciding which school you wish your child to attend. Further information can be found by looking at the frequently asked questions at the bottom of the page.

Whilst it is your responsibility to make sure that your children go to school, in some cases we can help with transport to make sure that your children can get to school. The Education Office - Harrogate can give advice and information about home to school transport.

Where can I find out more?

Please see the following pages for information about:

You should contact The Education Office - Harrogate if you wish to apply for:

  • free home to school transport;
  • assistance with transport to a denominational school;
  • concessionary transport;
  • post-16 transport to school or college; or
  • if you think your child has to walk a dangerous route to school.

Information about school transport timetables

Visit the timetable information page to search for up-to-date timetable information. Where the timetable is shown as 'permits only' this is solely for the use of transporting school pupils with a valid travel permit. If the timetable shows 'fares & permits' this service is providing transport at school times and offers facilities for fare paying pupils to access. Timetable information is available for bus services only you will need to contact the operator for more details about taxi services.

If you have been issued with a travel permit you should have this available for inspection when you are using school transport. If you require a replacement travel permit, you can apply online for a replacement travel permit.

Advice leaflets are available to download at the foot of this page - these explain what we do to ensure that home to school transport journeys are as safe as possible.
