What are these services?

Schools library service - advice and training

The school library service can provide advice and support on school libraries and related resources. We can also provide training on a range of library and information subjects.

The services on offer are:

Advice and support

Our skilled and knowledgeable staff provide impartial, informed advice in the management, organisation and use of school libraries and resources. We can visit your school and provide training to pupils; teachers; support staff; parents; and governors.

For example, we can give advice and support on library design; stock management; computerised library systems; writing a library policy; and promoting information literacy.

Training

We also offer a range of training courses to instil confidence and help you to turn your library into a vibrant learning space; a place where children may discover the pleasure of books and reading and become independent learners.

Training courses are provided throughout the year on a variety of subjects, including library management; reader development; and computerised library systems. For our latest courses and costs please see the word icon training programme [431kb] [word] document.

Training - 'Introduction to the school library'

This course will be held on Thursday 27 June 2013, 9.30am - 4pm in the SLS training room, 21 Grammar School Lane, Northallerton.

This training course is for teachers, teaching assistants and school librarians and provides a good basic understanding of what knowledge is required to run an effective school library. The course consists of a basic introduction on how to involve pupils and staff in the development and running of an effective primary school library. It also provides a standalone session about writing a library policy and development plan.

The School Library Service, along with many school libraries, is undergoing change and challenges. We are holding a series of discussion groups and networking opportunities on five strands around this main theme. The day will be facilitated by Andy Newbound. There will be five main strands:

  • Creating a reading school
  • Maintaining professionalism
  • E-future
  • Supporting knowledge development and independent  learning
  • Partnerships and working with the school library service
