Schools and colleges

North Yorkshire Children and Young People's Service supports schools across the county.

Three and four year old settings

Provision for three and year year olds in North Yorkshire is made through the County Council's nursery schools, nursery classes attached to primary schools and through over private and voluntary providers to ensure high quality early education places all over the county.

Primary schools

North Yorkshire has a mix of infant, junior and all-through primary schools (3-11 or 4-11 years). You can find further information about primary school admissions here.

Secondary schools

Most of North Yorkshire's secondary schools are comprehensive although there are two areas of selective grammar school education in Ripon and Skipton. Transfer to secondary education is at 11. In addition there are Pupil Referral Units Harrogate, Northallerton, Scarborough, Selby and Skipton. You can find further information about secondary school admissions here.

Special schools

There are 11 special schools. Several mainstream schools also have extra resources to allow them to make provision for certain types of special educational needs. These are called enhanced mainstream schools.

Please note - You can apply at any time for a change of school due to special circumstances (e.g. change of address or other reason for leaving the present school). This is commonly known as a mid year or casual admission.
