Schools and collegesNorth Yorkshire Children and Young People's Service supports 388 schools across the county as well as four outdoor education centres and four pupil referral service bases (which provide education to pupils at risk of exclusion or who are permanently excluded from school).Three and four year old settingsProvision for three and year year olds in North Yorkshire is made through the County Council's three nursery schools, nursery classes attached to primary schools and through over 300 private and voluntary providers to ensure high quality early education places all over the county. Applications for pupils starting infant, junior or primary schools for the first time in the academic year 2011/12 can be submitted at any time between October 2010 and 15 January 2011. Any applications submitted after 15 January 2011 will be considered to be late applications and may not be considered until after those received on time. Primary schoolsNorth Yorkshire has 323 primary schools. There is a mix of infant, junior and all-through primary schools (3-11 or 4-11 years). Applications for pupils transferring from primary to secondary or middle schools in September 2011 can be submitted at any time from June 2010 to 31 October 2010. Any applications submitted after 31 October 2010 will be considered to be late applications and may not be considered until after those received on time. Secondary schoolsThere are 47 secondary schools (of which 24 offer sixth form education). Most of these are comprehensive although there are two areas of selective grammar school education in Ripon and Skipton. Transfer to secondary education is at 11, apart from the North Craven area where transfer to middle school is at 10. In addition there are four Pupil Referral Service bases, at Harrogate, Northallerton, Scarborough and Skipton. You can find further information about secondary school admissions here. Special schoolsThere are 11 special schools, one of which is at Sedbergh in Cumbria. Four mainstream schools also have extra resources to allow them to make provision for certain types of special educational needs. Please note - You can apply at any time for a change of school due to special circumstances (e.g. change of address or other reason for leaving the present school).
