School governors

In North Yorkshire there are over 5000 governors serving 392 schools. Governors play an important role in the life of a school as they are accountable for, and have a responsibility for, the work of the school.

In a recent report Her Majesty's Chief Inspector of Schools said "It is not possible to prove that good governance leads to good schools, as the cause and effect evidence is impossible to isolate. However, there are very strong indicators to show where there is good governance the school is more likely to be successful" i.e. governors can and do make a difference.

Governors are supported by the Local Authority (LA) which provides a wide range of support services, information and materials. The LA works to ensure that the crucial role that governors play in the life of North Yorkshire schools is recognised and understood.

Are you interested in the education and well-being of our young people? Are you enthusiastic and committed and would you like to get involved in helping shape the future of our children? If so, then why not become a school governor. Schools are fascinating places and being a governor can be very enjoyable and worthwhile.

Governors come from all sections of the community: parents, staff at the school, businesses and local community representatives – in fact almost anyone. There is always a need for enthusiastic and committed people to serve as governors. Being a governor can be very rewarding. You don't need any special qualifications – just a commitment to help schools do the best they can for all our children. For more information see Frequently Asked Questions below.
