Planning

Planning shapes the places where people live and work. Good planning ensures that we get the right development, in the right place and at the right time. The County Council plays a fundamental role in ensuring that the future development needs of the county can be accommodated whilst ensuring that development takes place in economically, socially and environmentally sustainable ways.

  • Preparing statutory land use plans within the new planning system (the North Yorkshire minerals and waste plan);
  • Managing the county development control function, dealing with all planning applications for minerals (e.g. quarries oil and gas sites) and waste (e.g. landfill and recycling) developments and the County Council's own development (e.g. schools, libraries, and highways); and
  • Monitoring, compliance and enforcement of planning matters associated with minerals and waste sites and the County Council's own development proposals.

Planning - who has responsibility and where do I apply?

In North Yorkshire, if your planning development falls within a National Park boundary, you will need to get more information from Yorkshire Dales National Park or North York Moors National Park and apply to them for planning permission. Otherwise, the following applies.

Minerals and waste planning

If you are looking for planning permission for a minerals or waste development, the County Council is responsible for this. Find out more about minerals and waste planning here.

Residential or industrial planning

If you are looking for planning permission for a residential or industrial development, your local district council is responsible for this. Find out more about residential planning here and business planning here.
