Common land and village green register

The County Council as a commons registration authority is responsible for maintaining the 'Registers of Common Land and Village Greens' for North Yorkshire (excluding the City of York).

This register is a statutory document and shows all such registered land in your area. Each area of common land and town or village green is listed in the registers under a unique 'unit number'.

We have a duty to maintain the registers, which includes updating the registers when ownership of common rights change, or where rights are apportioned. However, we depend on information provided by interested parties e.g. land owners and right holders and we have no duty to proactively pursue 'amendments'.

We also amend the registers when we are notified by the Land Registry of changes in ownership of land, and we amend the registers in some instances to show changes in address.

The registers are available for public inspection free of charge by appointment. There are several ways to find out if specific areas of land are included on the registers of common land and village greens for North Yorkshire.

We also offer a chargeable service to carry out official searches of the registers and to provide certificates, usually when a property is being bought or sold.
