Sustainability

A widely-used and accepted international definition of sustainable development is: 'development which meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs'.

In 2005 the UK government published "pdf icon Securing the future [5mb] [pdf]", which is the government's strategy for sustainable development and which forms the basis of North Yorkshire County Council's approach. The strategy identifies four priority areas:

  • Sustainable consumption and production;
  • Climate Change and energy;
  • Natural resource protection and environmental enhancement; and
  • Creating sustainable communities and a fairer world.

The message is a simple one: these are global issues that require local action and remember your actions, however small, can make a difference.
