Carbon management

Carbon management is a strategic approach that affects the whole organisation and fits in with an organisation's existing strategy and management.

The aim is to:

  • understand how to control carbon emissions and what affects emissions;
  • identify key risks;
  • develop a plan to reduce carbon emissions;
  • effectively put into place, review and update the plan into the future; and
  • tell people about success.

Why?

It is widely accepted by scientists that carbon dioxide is the main gas responsible for climate change and it is caused by people.

Carbon management is about reducing the risks from carbon emissions and climate change, now and in the future, while taking into account circumstances, regulations and other factors.

What's in it for NYCC?

Successfully adopting and implementing carbon management will lead to:

  • an increased awareness of the potential impacts of climate change on Local Authorities; and
  • a greater capacity to identify and deal with these impacts.

By making Carbon Management central to our business, we become better able to adapt to an increasingly carbon-constrained economy and help the UK become less dependent in importing carbon based fuels from other parts of the world.

It will help the Council to achieve its carbon dioxide reduction targets, save money, help to meet the UK's sustainable development targets (as included in 'Securing the Future'), contribute to the UK's obligations under the Kyoto protocol, EU directives (Energy Performance of Buildings Directive) and new Building Regulations.

What's in it for you?

Carbon Management identifies opportunities to reduce emissions. This in turn reduces our energy bills, leaving more money available to deliver services.
