Libraries - local collections
Through North Yorkshire libraries and the North Yorkshire County Record Office, students and researchers at all levels and of all ages can investigate the background and significance of local and regional history.
The resources available include: - access to local history websites using library computers;
- electoral rolls and poll books;
- help with genealogy and family history;
- historic local newspapers on microfilm;
- local census information;
- parish register records;
- property history; and
- trade directories;
- Ancestry.com available via our people's network computers based in each library.
- Oxford Dictionary of National Biography (DNB) contains 50,000 biographies of people who shaped the history of the British Isles and beyond, from the earliest times to the present. Available in libraries and remotely via DNB Online. (library card number and PIN required)

They were introduced in 1696 and ceased after secret balloting was introduced by the Act of 1872. Several libraries in North Yorkshire store poll books, along with the County Record Office in Northallerton. Historic local newspapers in North YorkshireNewspapers are a great source of information for the local historian. Libraries in North Yorkshire continue to collect and preserve local newspapers, including the free advertisers. The family history website from the BBC contains information on the basics of family history research, the first steps to take, a family history research timeline and an interactive step-by-step guide.
- East Yorkshire Family History Society
The East Yorkshire Family History Society have four meetings a month in Beverley, Bridlington, Hull and Scarborough, operate free family research help desks across the region and publish a quarterly journal, the Banyan Tree.

- The British Library Newspaper Reading Room
The Reading Rooms at Colindale, North London, provide access to most of the British Library's major collections of British and overseas newspapers. The collections also include popular magazines, trade papers and comics.
