Libraries - computers and the internetOur libraries have over 340 computers available for use, provided through a National Lottery funded government programme, the People's Network.
At our libraries you can:
Please note that you are unable to save personal files on the computers themselves, as they are automatically reset after each session. It is possible however, to save work onto floppy discs, writable CDs or a memory stick. These are available for purchase from the library. All libraries also offer facilities for printing from library computers. If you need assistance with printing, please ask a member of staff to help you. Charges for using library computersYou can use the computers for free for the first half hour (one hour free for those aged 17 years or under), if you are a member of North Yorkshire's libraries. After this free time there are various charges for using the computers. You can also pay an annual subscription if you use the computers regularly. There are also charges for other services such as printing. Please see the library charges page for more details. Booking a library computer in advanceYou do not need to book in advance to use a library computer, you can just call in and use a computer straight away, if there is one available. However, many of our libraries are very busy, and if you know that you want to use a computer, it is best to book in advance. You can phone your local library to do this. If you need to use any special features, such as a scanner or DVD burner, please mention this when booking. Help and support with using library computersIf you find it difficult to use the computers, library staff will be able to help you. There is also a range of specialist equipment available for people with disabilities to access the internet and use the computers. A member of staff will be happy to help you with these. Most libraries also have a regular programme of informal training sessions to help people with the basics and many of these are free. Ask at your local library for details.
