Libraries - online information resources
North Yorkshire libraries and information service is pleased to be able to offer free online access to authoritative information sources such as Oxford University Press, Encyclopaedia Britannica and Ancestry.com, amongst others.
You can access the following online information resources from any library computer. You can also use your library card to access them from home or any other computer outside a library. New service: Newsstand Use Newsstand to access articles in over 90 national and regional UK newspapers, including the Northern Echo. Each issue of each newspaper is indexed thoroughly, so you can access not only top news stories but also information contained in the various sections of the papers. The indexing covers not only complete bibliographic information but also companies, people, products, etc. Other online information resourcesThe following online information resources are only available via our people's network computers based in each library: Accessing the online information resourcesYou will need a library card number to access the service from home or any other computer outside of a library. Access to the services from a library computer should not require a library card as the service should automatically log you in. Speak to a member of staff if you have problems accessing a service. Using information from the online information resourcesIf you want to use information from the resources, you can copy and paste what you need into a document, or print it out. However, if you are referencing work for school, college or university, you should always cite where you got the information from. When you have joined your local library you are entitled to use any library in the County using the same card. - Encyclopaedia Britannica Junior (for ages five to 11)
Britannica Junior is part of Encyclopaedia Britannica Online Library Edition, which offers content at three different levels. Britannica Junior is designed for primary school students.

- Grove Art Online
Grove Art Online comprises the full text of 'The Dictionary of Art' and 'The Oxford Companion to Western Art'.
- Life in Great Britain - citizenship course
The new online self-learn course and mock tests will help you prepare for the official 'Life in the UK' test.
- Newsstand

- Oxford Dictionary of National Biography
The site contains 50,000 biographies of people who shaped the history of the British Isles and beyond, from the earliest times to the present.
- Oxford English Dictionary Online
Access the Oxford English Dictionary online, "the definitive record of the English language". You will need your North Yorkshire library card to access this service.
- Oxford Reference Online Premium
You can gain access to English dictionaries, thesauruses, bilingual dictionaries, quotations, maps and illustrations, timelines, encyclopedia and various subject references.
- University of Glasgow - how to cite references
An introduction to citation standards and referencing from the University of Glasgow library. Advice is offered on the two most commonly used systems, Harvard (alphabetical / author, date) and Vancouver (numerical).
- Who's Who and Who Was Who
Who's Who and Who Was Who is the essential directory of the noteworthy and influential in all walks of life, in the UK and worldwide, published annually since 1849. It also includes over 100,000 entries from the archives of Who’s Who dating back to 1897.
