Arts - development

Whitby Music Port © Malcolm Downie.
North Yorkshire County Council works in partnership with others to promote the arts throughout the county. We recognise the value of the arts in their own right and also their impact on economic, environmental and social regeneration.

Currently the County Council:

  • Provides arts for children and young people (Connecting Youth Culture: CYC and the County Music Service) and supports three projects: voluntary arts, festivals and events and arts-based creative industries.
  • Gives funding to five arts delivery partners whose work has a significant impact across North Yorkshire: Chrysalis Arts; the Georgian Theatre Royal, Richmond; Harrogate (White Rose) Theatre; Rural Arts North Yorkshire and the Stephen Joseph Theatre, Scarborough.
  • Acts as an advocate for culture in general, and the arts in particular, to demonstrate how they can enhance quality of life and impact on the regeneration of communities.
  • Works in partnership with Arts Council England (Yorkshire), district and City of York councils and others to ensure a strategic approach to arts delivery and liaises with relevant regional and national bodies and other non-arts organisations.
  • Acts as a single point of contact for cultural enquiries.
