Winter road safety

The road safety team offers winter driving tips for motorists in North Yorkshire. Below is a safety checklist to help drivers prepare for winter and be safe during bad weather. Drivers are advised to get their car serviced and consider joining a breakdown service before winter closes in.

Winter car kit

You should load this into your car boot and keep it there.

  • Warm hi-visibility clothing and a blanket
  • De-icer and a scraper
  • Fully charged mobile phone with plenty of credit
  • A torch with spare batteries
  • A spade or shovel
  • Some old carpet or matting
  • Chocolate or energy bars
  • Gloves, socks and wellington boots
  • For longer journeys or in bad weather, take a flask with a hot drink as well

There are certain things you should do each time you drive.

Before driving

  • Clear all windows of mist, frost or ice.
  • Check that all lights work.
  • Plan to use main, treated roads, even if it puts a few miles onto your journey, but remember that they may still be icy.

While driving

  • Increase your braking distance. It takes much longer to stop on slippery roads.
  • Avoid sudden or harsh braking, steering and accelerating to prevent skidding.
  • Use dipped headlights (not sidelights) in poor visibility.
