Roads - grittingThe County Council is responsible for keeping North Yorkshire moving during periods of extreme weather. We have to prioritise our activity as the road network within the County is 9,000km. Our main priority is to keep major routes treated and passable followed by other important routes.
Find out the priority of the route you live or travel onYou can find information about gritting routes, the locations of salt bins and heaps and ice station cameras by using our online mapping. Road treatmentsIn widespread freezing and wet conditions roads will be treated as resources permit with priority given to priority one routes, and then once treated priority two routes. Generally treatment does not take place between 11.00pm and 5.00am, however specific conditions may require us to do so.
During periods of prolonged heavy snowfall pavements are treated only after the main carriageway routes have been cleared. Please see the link below for further information on clearing pavements and footpaths. Gritting updates on twitterWe will update twitter with information on planned gritting activity in each of the seven highways areas in North Yorkshire. Follow the council @northyorkscc or use the hashtag #nygrit to see the latest information. Please remember that should conditions change, our gritting teams will adapt accordingly.
