Roads - maintenance - structural surveys

To assess and monitor the condition of the county's highway and to identify the level of maintenance required a programme of inspections and surveys are carried out.

Inspections and surveys are delivered in line with the pdf icon highway maintenance plan [342kb] [pdf] and it defines the County Council's policies and methods for maintenance of the highway network.

Method of monitoring highway condition

Overview

Inspection programme

Our Highway Inspectors undertake traditional visual surveys and safety inspections of the network to determine whether reactive maintenance works are required. Our inspection process is robust and exceeds national standards. The frequency of inspection is dependent on the classification of the highway.

Surveys

Condition surveys are undertaken to get information on the nature and condition of the carriageway. This allows us to identify the most appropriate maintenance treatment and ensure value for money.

A variety of machine and visual survey techniques help us identify and prioritise our annual programme of maintenance schemes.
