Pavements - maintenance

The County Council regularly inspects and maintains the majority of pavements throughout North Yorkshire. This enables us to increase safety for pedestrians and to catch faults quickly before they cause major cost or cause inconvenience.

North Yorkshire has many kilometres of pavements throughout the county and due to the rural nature of North Yorkshire these are of many different types with differing amounts of usage. Maintaining these pavements is a vital role for the council.   It is important to regularly inspect and maintain pavements to improve safety for pedestrians and to increase accessibility.

Where there are cycle paths associated with the pavement network, these are also the responsibility of the council and receive the same amount of attention and maintenance as pavements.

Some pavements and paved areas in the county are the responsibility of other authorities or organisations.

  • Pavements alongside Trunk Roads are managed by the Highways Agency.
  • District Councils also own and maintain some pavements in the county.
  • There are many private areas that the council has no control over.

Whichever the situation might be, please contact ourselves and we will endeavour to identy the owner and deal with your enquiry efficiently.
