Permanent traffic signals are provided at junctions to:

  • reduce traffic conflicts and delays;
  • interrupt a continuous stream of main road traffic in order to allow side road traffic to flow;
  • meet pedestrian needs;
  • reduce collisions;
  • aid progression in linked or urban traffic control schemes.

Provision of permanent traffic signals

The County Council is responsible for the provision and maintenance of all permanent traffic signals on the roads which we maintain, this includes:

  • Junction signals
  • Pedestrian crossing signals including:
    • pelican
    • puffin
    • toucan
    • Pegasus, equestrian and zebra crossings

Additional facilities may also be provided to assist disabled pedestrians in safe passage across the road, for example audible and tactile signals and signs mounted above the push button for visually impaired pedestrians.
