Roads - wall maintenance

Generally the walls and fences that surround property and fields are usually erected by landowners to provide security, privacy and to mark boundaries.

These boundary walls and fences are the responsibility of the landowner to maintain. However, if you have a concern regarding a wall or fence that is in a state of disrepair which is encroaching on the highway, or is causing a safety hazard for highway users, you should report this to us.

The County Council, as highways authority, will maintain and repair:

  1. Walls supporting the structure of the highway - these are called highway retaining walls;
  2. Walls retaining land that has been excavated in cutting to form a highway parapet wall on bridges; and
  3. Walls providing a safety barrier for example a steep drop at the other side of the wall.

You can report a concern with a wall or fence that is encroaching on the highway, or is causing a safety hazard for highway users by:
