What is the policy for educational visits?
All schools are required to have a written policy for off-site visits and activities. In addition the Local Education Authority (LEA) has a formal Code of Practice in place. Under this Code of Practice schools are required to notify the LEA of all off-site visits and activities. All activities must have formal approval before proceeding. Schools can give formal approval for all types of visit or activity except for:
These activities must have the approval of the LEA before they proceed.
Schools must appoint or nominate an Educational Visits Co-ordinator who is responsible for ensuring that planning of off-site visits and activities has been undertaken satisfactorily whilst the headteacher and/or governors have the delegated responsibility to give formal approval for visits (with the exception of those types of activities outlined above).
The LEA has a responsibility to monitor off-site visits and activities and this is undertaken by reviewing documentation provided by schools, accompanying school visits and by unannounced spot checks in order to monitor health and safety.
