What are these services?

Do you have a healthy eating policy?

Yes. A good diet is important for good health. A healthy and varied diet can help maintain a healthy body weight, enhance general well-being and reduce the number of diseases such as heart disease, stroke, cancer, diabetes and osteoporosis.

The provision of school meals in North Yorkshire encompass the Government's guidelines for a healthy diet, which are:

  • to enjoy your food;
  • to eat a variety of different foods;
  • to eat the right amount to be a healthy weight;
  • to eat plenty of foods rich in starch and fibre;
  • to eat plenty of fruit and vegetables;
  • not to eat too many foods that contain a lot of fat;
  • not to have sugary foods and drinks too often.

What's in a school lunch?

  • All the meat and poultry used is from Yorkshire farms
  • Fruit and vegetables are from suppliers committed to the regional sourcing of fruit and vegetables, based in Yorkshire.
  • Only free range eggs are used, sourced from Yorkshire producers
  • Only non hydrogenated fats are used in baking
  • Low fat products such as yoghurts are used
  • At least three of the five fruit and vegetables a day
  • Plenty of plant based fibre and slow release carbohydrate
  • Zinc, calcium and vitamins for healthy growth
  • All recipes are low salt and low sugar.

What's not in a school lunch?

We do not use products which have additives such as sweeteners, thickeners, emulsifiers and colourings which have been associated with health problems in children and young adults.
