What are these services?

Who might be causing the abuse?

Anybody may be an abuser. It may be somebody you know well or it may be a stranger. It may be more than one person.

It might be:

  • A member of your family, a friend or a neighbour;
  • A paid or voluntary carer;
  • A professional, for example a social worker, GP (doctor) or nurse;
  • A stranger;
  • A visitor to your home;
  • A bogus worker; or
  • If you live in a residential setting or visit a day centre, it may be another user of that service; a visitor; or a carer.

The abuse may have only happened once or started recently, or it may have happened several times or been happening for a long time. It may be that the abuse is deliberate or it may be unintentional and due to ignorance or lack of training or understanding. It may be that a person is at risk of abuse or being abused in several ways.

Whoever is causing the abuse, it needs to be stopped. Doing nothing is not an option.

Reporting abuse - members of the public

If you suspect that you or someone you know is being abused then you should report this.

Please see the reporting abuse page for details of how to do this.

Reporting abuse - service providers

The procedure to report abuse is different for service providers in the statutory, voluntary or independent sectors.

These organisations should use the word icon inter-agency safeguarding adults alert/referral form [331kb] [word] to report abuse. The form includes full instructions.

The North Yorkshire safeguarding adults board

The North Yorkshire safeguarding adults board works to protect adults who may be at risk from abuse and promotes co-operation and effective working practices between different agencies.

See the North Yorkshire safeguarding adults board page for more information, including policies and procedures; services guidance; and details of training courses for service providers.
