What are these services?

How are short break arrangements reviewed?

The 1989 Children Act provides a clear legislative framework for short-term care. The Act requires children to be consulted about their needs and about the services to be provided. If the child is receiving short breaks that involve overnight stays, the child's social worker will draw up a care plan, visit the child and review the arrangements on a regular basis. Whichever agency is providing the short-term care, it should always be part of an integrated approach to meeting the child s needs.

Care plans are reviewed annually once links or placements are well established. These meetings are known as reviews. Parents and children are always invited to reviews as well as the carers and the social workers who co-ordinate the plans. Young people are encouraged to participate in these meetings and to make their wishes and feelings known about the breaks.
